Vocal Music Goals for K-2
The main goals for music class in kindergarten, first and second grade are listed below. These concepts are seen in the report card each trimester. There are many more musical skills we work toward throughout the year, which are outlined in the curriculum. A variety of songs and music from different countries, genres, and styles are used throughout the year to teach these concepts as well as the history and cultural significance.
Kindergarten
First Grade
Second Grade
- Recognizes & demonstrates the difference between singing and speaking voice, high and low, and fast and slow.
- Participates in singing activities, sings simple songs, and performs steady beat motions.
- Creates & improvises beat/rhythm patterns and movements to music.
First Grade
- Sings simple songs in tune while participating in activities and using steady beat motions.
- Sings, reads, and writes on the music staff using sol, mi, and la solfege
- Performs, reads and writes rhythm patterns including quarter, eighth notes, and rests.
- Creates & improvises beat/rhythm patterns and movements to music.
Second Grade
- Sings simple songs in tune while participating in activities and using steady beat motions, as well as simple songs in two part rounds.
- Sings, reads, and writes on the music staff using la, sol, mi, and do solfege
- Performs, reads and writes rhythm patterns including half, quarter, eighth notes, and rests.
- Creates & improvises beat/rhythm patterns and movements to music.
